Greater Psychological Health

Mindfulness

We talk about psychological health in two ways: One is physical health and the other mental health. When we talk of psychological health, we are talking about the well-being of our minds and our spirit. This has to do with the ability to live life well in all its dimensions, including happiness, creativity, prosperity, and health. It also includes having a sense of self that is grounded in our values and commitments.

Our ability to do this comes from how we were raised by our parents and how the people we know discourage us from acting on those things that would make us feel good. Some of these things include being passive, withdrawing, procrastinating, lying, being argumentative, and harming others. The way we act reflects not only upon ourselves but also upon the people around us.

If we can grow up to be healthy in all these ways, then we will have greater psychological health as we go on throughout our lives.

For instance, did you know that when a child is afraid of the dark, he or she becomes more able to handle light?

Light fear is better than dark fear. This has to do with the fact that light fears do not last very long. As they grow older, however, things change and their perceptions of things change as well.

We have to be willing to let go of the things that hold us back from being who we really are. We have to be willing to trust ourselves enough to do this. We have to be willing to take action as though our actions will have long-lasting consequences. We have to be willing to be vulnerable and speak out without fearing criticism. Those who do so find that they are valued and trusted.

When we speak out, we gain strength. When we are fearful, we gain power. This all ties into psychological health. When we are willing to stand up for ourselves, our goals, and our values, we find that we gain the ability to make changes that positively affect us and those around us. In turn, we find that we get to have an impact on others as well.

If you are struggling with something in your life, I encourage you to seek help. There is no reason for you to continue suffering. There is no reason for you to deal with stress and anxiety unnecessarily. You deserve to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life.
